Children’s Cove Honors Dave Lawton, President of Barnstable Youth Basketball, With “Above and Beyond for Children Award” at Annual Conference.

Mr. Lawton was given the award for his dedication to the health, wellness and safety of Cape Cod-area children.

HYANNIS, MA – On Wednesday, September 11th, Dave Lawton of Barnstable Youth Basketball was awarded the “Above and Beyond for Children” award by Children’s Cove at their annual conference on child sexual abuse at the Cape Codder in Hyannis. This annual award is given to figures in the community that routinely go above and beyond the call of duty to ensure the health, wellness and safety of children in their care.

“Dave is very deserving of this award. His commitment to keeping the children in his league healthy and safe, and his educational efforts with coaches and parents, are a tremendous service to the Barnstable community.” says Stacy Gallagher, Executive Director of Children’s Cove. “It’s becoming increasingly important for parents to be careful about who they let around their children. Dave has been hugely helpful in getting his league, coaches and parents up to speed on abuse prevention and reporting.”

Many leagues do not require thorough background checks or training about how to spot the signs of and report child sexual abuse. Children’s Cove’s annual conference on child sexual abuse brings together professionals from across the spectrum of childhood care and development. Presenters and attendees represent school systems, District Attorney’s offices, police departments and child advocacy organizations from across New England and the country. With 1 in 6 boys and 1 in 4 girls victims of child sexual abuse, the importance of education about the issue has grown as several high profile incidents have brought child sexual abuse to the forefront.

Over 150 attendees were at this year’s event, the 13th year that Children’s Cove has hosted its Conference on Child Sexual Abuse on Cape Cod.
