IU2U – Take the Pledge

The Pledge

What is The Pledge?

The Pledge is a commitment that parents and children make together to focus on the importance of their online safety. There are numerous tools and technological safeguards you can use, but it is important to understand that It’s Up To You to protect your family from the online sexual exploitation of children.

Why Commit to The Pledge?

By committing to The Pledge, you are choosing to take an active role in learning the tools and having conversations about body and online safety to prevent the online sexual exploitation of children.

Who Should Take The Pledge?

Everyone who is online should take The Pledge and understand that It’s Up To You to prevent the online sexual exploitation of children

I recognize that the online sexual exploitation of children is a very real issue, and I can do my part to make the internet a safer place for all children. By having conversations about safety, being open and involved in our online lives, and talking about situations which are unsafe, or which make us uncomfortable, we can be safe online.

    • I Pledge To:
    • Respect myself and others in everything I do online.
    • Stop talking to someone online if they make me uncomfortable, as I would in real life.
    • Involve my parents in what I do online, follow rules of safety, and talk about things that make me uncomfortable.
    • Tell a trusted adult if someone asks me to do something unsafe online, such as send pictures of the private parts of my body, or give any personal information about myself or someone else.
    • Talk with a trusted adult if someone online asks me to meet them in real life, and never to meet someone I’ve met online without an adult.
    • Understand that not everyone online may be who they say they are – and they may try to hurt me.
    • Understand that nothing online is really private, no matter what anyone tells me, and that anything sent or posted is forever, even if it seems to “disappear.”
    • I Pledge To:
    • Be regularly involved in my children’s online life, as I am with their sports, school, and friends.
    • Teach about the dangers of the internet: from predators to scary and violent content.
    • Enact safeguards of internet-enabled devices for younger children and discuss expectations and rules of the internet with older children.
    • Be available to listen to my children without judgement in talking about situations they encounter online.
    • Learn about and have the conversation with my children about online grooming and the dangers of online sexual exploitation.
    • To check in with my children regularly, creating a safe time and opportunity for difficult conversations.
    • Report, or ask for help, with any harassment, threats, or instances of sexual exploitation of children I learn about.
